Ran into my old trainer from Oxygen on the way home from Extreme and he told me that John and Anthony (former owners of Oxygen) have opened "Pure Fitness" at Laird and Eglinton.
Anyone know anything about this? I actually received a flyer in the mail about it today. |

| All I know is that Chris, my old trainer from Oxygen, is there -- and I got a few pitch phone calls from them way back when. |

| Pure Fitness flyer: $4 for 4 months!! It looks like a smaller place from the outside, but haven't been in yet. It's just north of Home Depot. It looks good. I suggest instead of hauling yourself out to Wellington to avoid "the construction", you just switch to Pure Fitness. I for one am looking into it. |

For my part, it misses the point of why I joined Oxygen.
I left the Training Room, a perfectly decent gym, after having been there for 10 years, because I wanted something within easy walking distance. I could work out, go to IGA, Shopper's, the bank, Home Hardware, whatever -- all in one trip. I could come home and shower. I didn't need a car.
I will be joining Riverdale Fitness for that reason. It will allow me to have what I had at oxygen -- minus the StepMill and the rowing machines (which are gone anyway) -- and stay in the neighbourhood.
Having to travel to another gym -- including cleaning off snow and warming up the car -- not only adds time I don't have to a workout, it is not good for the environment. |

| I'm with you on that. While it would be nice to join a bigger gym that actually has customer service, I really want a gym close to me, close to shopping etc, that doesn't take 1/2 hour to get to, or a trip on the TTC. That is why I will be joining Riverdale Fitness, very soon. |

I joined Pure Fitness recently. I've talked about its merits elsewhere on this forum. But to answer a couple of your queries: it is very spacious and uncrowded with fabulous change rooms / showers, etc. The equipment, spinning class room, daycare, and other rooms are located on the upper level -- it's huge -- I'm not a good judge of space but I'd hazard to say it's in excess of 15,000 sq. ft. (Somebody else know?)
They have space on the street level that is being developed (and unlike Extreme, the leasehold improvements are not jeopardizing members' work out space/experience). My understanding is that it will include a members' lounge and professional services (e.g., chiropractor).
The $2 deal is a gimmick which serves to capture your attention. As I was told that "contract" is for 4 months but the 3rd and 4th month are at a rate of $100. You're far better off paying for the full year in advance or making some other arrangement.
I live north west of Danforth and Pape -- but still south of Mortimer. My commute to Pure Fitness is between 8-9 minutes depending on traffic / traffic lights. I measured it several times while I was using a multi-week guest pass to Pure Fitness (and before I committed to a membership there). |

Thanks but that's probably a lot more gym than I want or need.
If I am gonna drive, I might as well go back to The Training Room at Carlaw and Lakeshore where I worked out for 10 years before joining Oxygen because it was more conveniently located. Besides, The Training Room is only 2 klicks away more or less. Not a bad walk. It's just that I can't combine it with other errands I do on the Danforth. |
